I hope it is okay to talk about my own Web 2.0 application... Please forgive the self promotion if not.
At http://www.haikuls.com you will find haiku LMS, an on-demand learning management system in the Web 2.0 "tradition." Already, educators across the US and the world are using haiku LMS to extend their classrooms to the Web; most of them for free. Individual educators can use haiku LMS for free, or pay to upgrade as needed. And if districts or universities want an alternative to the more traditional LMS aps like Blackboard, haiku LMS is a great option.

I retired from a 42-year teaching career, most of it at middle-school level, but 5 years of it doing teacher-training in Beirut, Lebanon. My best results came from interdisciplinary teaching, sometimes in a team-situation, sometimes under over-arching themes rather than categories or topics. I also employed a visual approach growing out of brain-based research on learning and memory. I've shared these experiences that effectively changed my way of teaching for the last seventeen years of my classroom life in two books published by Rowman and Littlefield. I'd love to stay in contact with teachers still actively in the classroom to keep up on what they are doing and trying, and also like to share things at my website: www.madlonlaster.com The brain files by association, so if we associate various disciplines in a classroom unit of study, we help young minds go farther and retain more. These two comments - one from a chemistry professor and the other from an administrator really sum up what it we do - allow students to have a genuine high quality lab experience away from the campus-based laboratory...
AHS lab kits are certainly helping students get the kind of hands-on experience that a face to face chemistry lab provides. While certainly not providing each and every technique, these experiments go a long way in providing a medium for the students to get a first hand experience of learning Chemistry by doing. Further, it does provide a medium for students to think about the experiment they are performing and draw conclusions as in a regular brick and mortar Chemistry Lab. Venkat Chebolu Chemistry Professor SUNY Jefferson NY We adopted your lab kits to complement our web-based Health Science courses and they are great! Our students get a genuine wet lab experience without coming to campus and excel in their classes. These kits provide a genuine science lab learning experience and are infinitely better than passive simulations. Alison Jacobs – Department Chair Health Sciences CCCOnline.

What is the best way to handle traditional quizzes and exams if not giving them in a face-to-face environment?

Do you think that hybrid courses have a greater potential for being accepted for transfer to other institutions than strictly virtual classes do? For example, I think the fact that our biology courses include some on-campus hands-on lab sessions improves the likelihood that they will be seen as comparable to traditional courses that have a lab component.

I think of designing a hybrid or blended class as a process of recognizing which learning activities are best done face-to-face and which are best done online, and then dividing the allotted time for the semester accordingly. What advice would view as most valuable for instructors new to this process, regarding how to determine which is which?

Post questions for Lisa in this forum thread:
Lisa, In your experience with using Wikis in the classroom, are they more likely to become static web pages over time or lively areas full of contributions? Why do you think this happens?
